The Kapellensteig trail is one of 5 premium hiking trails in Reit im Winkl in summer. In winter two premium trails are signposted on snow.
The trail is 6.5 kilometers long with an ascent of 304 meters. Depending on your own pace, you should plan 2:40 hours of pure walking time - and a lot more for small stops at the chapels, at viewpoints and benches with particularly beautiful views.
A good starting point is the Festsaal in Reit im Winkl, from where the yellow signs with blue letters and the crown symbol of the premium trails will guide you. Passing the church, a path above the school leads towards Pötschbichl, where you have one of the most beautiful views of the village and the Kaiser Mountains.
Numerous benches invite you to take a break, especially in autumn, when you want to collect as many warm sunbeams as possible before winter is approaching. If it's still cold in the morning, a sip of tea from the thermos is the best thing that can happen to you.
The silence at the Eckkapelle chapel is only interrupted by the rustling of the leaves. The noise of everyday's life in the valley is far, far away.
We admire the frescoes of the Eckkapelle chapel. How might that have been when they were painted? How was everyday life in Reit im Winkl at that time? It must have been a special time to beautify the little chapel in the forest, up on the mountain, so artistically.
We hike a little downhill, along the Way of the Cross, and then turn right onto the Amthorsteig trail, on which it goes comfortably through the forest to the waterfall. Here, too, you can't just walk past ... you watch the rushing water or the slow movements of the climbers in the Hausbachfall via ferrata.
Only a few minutes later we are standing at the Kriegerkapelle chapel. From the small forecourt we look down on the barefoot park and over the roofs of Reit im Winkl over the wide valley.
Those who are still motivated and do not allow themselves to be seduced by the smell of coffee and the clinking of glasses can hike on the Scheffelsteig trail to the lookout point and then to the Protestant Mountain Church. Here the autumn trees shine particularly brightly.
For a while we enjoy the sun on the bench in front of the little church. But it is time for refreshing drinks and some refreshment.
The autumn sun warms enough at noon to be able to sit outside in front of a pub or café. The alpine huts may already be closed in autumn - no problem on the Kapellensteig Premium Trail. Our hike ends in the middle of Reit im Winkl, where we have numerous refreshment stops to choose from.

She would much rather be out and about in the mountains around Reit im Winkl all day long, hiking and trail running, mountain biking, with skis and snowshoes, and having a snack on a mountain hut.
